Our Story

It's easy to hear stories about how long someone has lived in Whittier or why our families decided to make Whittier their home.  You will also hear the different ways we can make Whittier better: improved streets, more places for kids to play, ideas about new Uptown events, and concerns about homelessness, safety, and traffic.  Yet, the overriding theme is our strong sense of community, pride in our ethical leadership rooted in progress and care, our rich history, our collaboration, respect and kindness.

Whittier Together is comprised of: public servants, retired social workers, current & retired firefighters, current, and former law enforcement, media professionals, veterans (and veteran families), local business owners, non profit leaders, retired aircraft machinist, engineers, teachers, stay-at-home parents, and more.  We know Whittier's future will be a safe, united community as the result of preserving Whittier's spirit and values- everything good about our community- and creating our future.  Together.

Mission

We exist to support the ideas and values of the Whittier spirit- a city of 87,000 (and growing).  We engage the community, support strong ethical public leadership, and promote the understanding of civic and community concerns of Whittier.

Vision

A Whittier where the diversity of cultures, ethnicities, and dreams continue to be embraced, lived out in our community and in its local government.  In this vision, the Whittier Spirit of Community, Family, Vitality of Business, and Health & Safety are priorities for today, for tomorrow.

Values

Collaboration, Progress, Cooperation, Respect, Kindness, Friendliness, Care, Community-Mindedness.  These values echo the founding father's Quaker Values- Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, Stewardship- which built Whittier.

Your Local Government

Whittier City Council. Whittier’s local government operates under what is a common form of government at the local level: Council-Manager. This means a lot of things, most prominently that the elected officials on Council make legislative and policy decisions, and the City Manager takes those decisions and activates them by leading and managing the City organization (the hired/appointed professionals).

“The Mayor is the official head of the City for all ceremonial purposes and, together with all Council members, interprets the policies, programs and needs of the City government for the people. The Council elects a member to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore. The City Manager is the head of the administrative branch of the City government and is responsible to the City Council.

The City Council serves as the City’s primary policy-making and legislative body of the City. The Council also serves as the Whittier Redevelopment Successor Agency and the Whittier Public Financing Authority Board, Whittier Utility Authority and the Whittier Housing Authority. The City Council adopts the City's annual operating budget and capital improvement program” (City of Whittier Website, 2018).

Commissions. The City has a number of Commissions which are advisory/support bodies composed of Whittierites appointed by the CIty Council to serve. The Commissions are: Cultural Arts, Historic Resources, Parking & Transportation, Parks, Recreations & Community Services, Planning, and Social Services. Commissioners read, study, deliberate and decide on issues presented by City Hall Staff or City Council for the purpose of delivering an informed recommendation on action/potential action. Commissioners represent a form democratization of the governance process and a space for Whittierites to offer their talent and time for the betterment of the Community and the operation of the governance system.
